Imagine a place filled to the ceiling with thousands of toys of every variety, a veritable Wonka’s Factory of playthings. Imagine your children freely exploring this seemingly endless collection and then walking away with armloads of new toys. Imagine that it’s completely free. Now open your eyes and get excited because this is no dream, this is the Toy Library at the Lincoln Branch of the Monroe County Library System. It’s located on Joseph Ave in the city of Rochester.
The Toy Library contains over 5,000 toys and materials that support and enrich play-literacy learning experiences. The collection is primarily aimed at children ages newborn to 8 years old. Toys are selected for quality and safety to foster children’s development and early literacy skills. The Toy Library offers a community resource that allows families, caregivers, teachers, social workers, agencies and schools to meet the specific, growing needs of individuals and groups in a very cost effective way.
The Toy Library is a free, public play space in a safe, indoor environment. Children are given the freedom to explore and play with toys and materials from the Toy Library collection, with other children, as well as their caregivers, and can gain a variety of learning experiences.
Toys and materials are also available to support preschool, kindergarten and primary grade curriculum as well as remediation for the physically challenged, including visual and auditory difficulties.
With community support, Field Trips and Special Programs are offered for groups of children and adults including training programs for parents, childcare providers or teachers and can be customized to meet specific requests.
Items may be borrowed, free of charge, with a valid Monroe County library card. The borrowing period is 3 weeks and renewal extensions are possible by phone.
